GRF appoints new Chairman

Andrew Barr, BBC Scotland's former Head of Education and Religion, has become GRF's new Chairman. He retired from a 35-year career with the BBC and ITV in May this year and will bring a wealth of practical experience and a personal love of radio to the post.

Andrew Barr is admired throughout the industry as a 'future watcher' - he constantly thinks the unthinkable and seems to have an uncanny ability to anticipate what's around the corner. At a time when all programme-makers are facing the challenges of accelerating technological change and stimulating listeners in an environment of media saturation, these skills are invaluable.

As Chairman, Andrew Barr sees himself as GRF's 'critical friend' and is committed to offering thge voluntary team hands-on help with programme and production ideas.

"The offer of the GRF Chair came as a very welcome opportunity to continue working with a creative team - for me, the very essence of what makes life enjoyable."

"I have been impressed with the output from GRF, which meets the differing needs of Christian listeners and those on the fringes of faith - asking questions."

Brian Muir, GRF's Programme Controller adds: "Andrew has a highly impressive track record throughout his time in television across an eclectic range of programmes. He developed the first ever black gospel music series, edited BBC's Everyman and Heart of the Matter series, created ITV's Dial a Hymn and was responsible for the religious media reponse to the Dunblane and Zeebrugge tragedies.

"We will embrace his very welcome advice and support and are confident that under his chairmanship, GRF will continue to break new ground in religious programme making."
